Revisited this after 4 years and still have mixed feelings about it.
It’s not an accurate or appropriate depiction of DID at all, but it’s definitely one that put the most effort in. I just find it hard to understand the obsession with DID as a plot device. Imagine using someone with schizophrenia or BPD as the plot’s crux. It’s only because authors view it as a glorified means of “threesome but one person” type of storyline, the Jekyll and Hyde if you will.
I just wish there will come a day where this disorder is depicted more faithfully, and as a piece of fiction to help others learn of it, rather than a fetish poorly disguised as good intent.
All in all, do I like it for what it is? Sure. Do I condone or support its existence? Not really, but the author definitely tried… just didn’t try enough.
I don’t think he was ever a green flag, but we were never given enough reason to believe he was actual scum. He sleeps around, okay, not a crime or a bad thing at all. I mean, some people found the house set model and was convinced he was gonna kidnap and shoot Dan, as if it wasn’t a pre-made bg. Y’all had to convince yourselves he was bad to make it seem like Jaekyung was better.
So, yeah, honestly I’m surprised he turned out this way
I think people hoped he was different and Jae was just being an asshole. He was never set up as a green flag per se. I don’t think having fwbs necessarily makes someone a red flag or a bad character, but the fact he responded to potato being sincere and innocent w “I’ll throw him away if I get bored” just shows that the author has no place in mind for a peaceful story. Which is why I think people are upset, at least that’s why I am.
Also, please, let’s not act like an abusive and manipulative top is the same thing as a scumbag. One’s committing genuine crimes. Heesung is written a lot like Alex, we all know he’s gonna have the same redemption story. Jaekyung on the other hand? No amount of redemption excuses the literal class act felonies he’s committed in battery, assault, manipulation, and doctoring illegal contracts that treat Dan as an actual prostitute per the agreements.
Also, Jaekyung isn’t a red flag, he’s the nuclear warning signs outside Chernobyl.
I don’t think people realise that this story was never explicitly tagged as shounen ai, that was mangago’s mismanagement with the original uploader.
What I will say is there are subtle hints of it. The manga obviously has a greater story to tell than “two teenage boys fall in love UwU”. People are too hung up on gender and sexuality labels that people are failing to realise that their genders barely plays a role. Because of that, it isn’t being made explicit. We know the black haired boy had some affection for Hikaru that surpassed “normal” like. The creature now inhabiting Hikaru also has showcased an attachment to him.
But Hikaru is dead. There is no “romance” in the sense we’re getting confessions from a mythical revered god like creature inhabiting the mc’s best friend’s body. That isn’t gonna happen. If you guys were reading it for the shounen ai tag hoping there would be proper romance, what have you been doing… The art, atmosphere, and deeper story have been so amazingly done that it’s kind of an insult to boil it down to a shounen ai (which if really isn’t). So, just enjoy the story! If we get more hints at the romance plot, which is priority zero, then cool! And if we don’t? You’ll live.
PS: This is for the people complaining, not the people genuinely curious (but I mean come on, we’re on chapter god knows what and you didn’t notice the lack of bromosexual love)
Just as a final add on - the author has made BL related works before, they obviously like writing stories about the more realistic implications of a BL relationship. But you can tell that this feature is taking a back seat in their main story. I don’t doubt there might be something further down the line that gives closure to the romance subplot that are about as obvious as yellow text on a white background, but that feels a ways off with the development of the story! So, like I said. Enjoy the manga for the thriller mystery that it is, and don’t hold your breath for a kiss scene, you’ll die.
I mean, maybe people were expecting shounen-ai at some point in the story and kept reading in anticipation of it. It's not a crime to want a specific presence of a genre that people saw among the tags. No one is going to die from disappointment, but that doesn't make the disappointment any less valid.
The manga doesn’t shy away from dropping hints and giving them moments. It’s not like people came in here expecting some semblance of romantic intent and were left starved. My original comment isn’t about that, it’s the people wanting more. This manga has a story to tell which is greater than the love of two boys. There’s no doubt that the relationship will be explored as times goes on, but it moves at a glacier pace. If you read through the comments in the past and when this was written, people were genuinely upset about the lack of romantic revelation.
HOWEVER, as I stated in my original comment, this manga was never a shounen ai or advertised as one, that’s mangago’s mistake and social media who started sharing it as one. People came in here with pre conceived notions based on an accidental tag and silly tiktokers sharing this as a BL.
Somehow Mingwa made even the victim in this situation unlikeable. Not only is Jaekyung abusive and toxic, Dan is completely unable to stand up for himself. When the second lead treated him right, showed him affection, he rejected it. The second Jaekyung shows him the smallest crumb of being nice, REMINDER HE WAS BLACK OUT DRUNK, Dan is ready to risk it all.
How are we at chapter 50 and there’s been no change. Sorry, wait, let me correct that, somehow Jaekyung has gotten even more abusive and Dan has gotten even more spineless. Mingwa a needs a writer. BJ Alex was apparently a fluke, because Jinx is pretty much the same dynamic but the two of them maxed out. So much effort, time, money and skills wasted on such a nothing burger. This had every ingredient to make another classic BL, but instead it’s become infamous and will be known as the manhwa that failed every expectation except looking pretty.
And before anyone says not to read it, it’s a car crash. We’ve been here for over a year now reading this. I need to know how it ends so I can have some form of closure. Additionally, up until a few weeks ago I have officially stopped paying for chapters for this series. My money is better placed somewhere else like Cookie Run.
Happy birthday, Jaekyung~
I send my consolidations to everyone who has to live through another year of you
