Bro made all these choices to have their relationship end up as they are now. With these flashbacks, we’ll probably see the rose-colored memories and then see it start to have red flags leading up to the abuse, debt, etc. I think the scary part is having to waste so much of your years on this type of dude when you could’ve had a better life without him, met better people, had better opportunities.
