The author uses them as actual backgrounds instead of tracing or drawing over them
But the backgrounds dont exactly look like photos? They look like normal digital drawings
Author likely photoshops people out and adds digital filters to make it look more "drawing-like" but the cafe background is pretty obviously an actual photo. She did draw in the tables though.
