The thing is, I doubt that it's supposed to be about romance in any way when it comes to Patrick. Ian mentioned it but it's basically about Patrick being thrown off his high horse, because he used to be able to get anything he wanted to and this is the first time in life that he can't get something. So, it's more his ego being hurt :3
