I'm also a crammer but ngl none of the fancy tricks ever worked for me. What I do is:
-read the material then explain it to myself again like I'm teaching myself
-highlight/underline important stuff if you have a written copy
-write down important terms then their summarized meaning (A - summarized meaning of A in a single sentence) after reading ......
