I think everything makes sense after seeing that will. I mean, it's the only reason I could think of for the ml to be so cold and detached from the mc before losing his memories: as an esper, he knew his job was risky and he could lose his life at any moment, so he couldn't allow himself to create attachments such as a romantic relationship cuz he would leave the person heartbroken if one day he might die in a mission.
