I hate the narrative that having kids is supposed to make a person happy. It's just an excuse for the parents to be selfish. Not everyone wants kids and people need to but out of other people lives.

Sometimes I think it is just because people were raised in a different time. getting married, get a nice house, and have a few babies. That was the "dream" that was sold to the older generation. Younger generation have a lot more opportunities so honestly hitting the stop button to have a family just isn't all that great anymore. The more you push away from the "dream" such as having a different sexual orientation or even wanting to focus on your career, the more the older generation has to realize that what they put their whole lives into isn't the only way anymore. and at that point they've wasted years by pushing their kids away when they should have been bringing them closer
Totally valid existential crisis
