At first, the promise with the mountain only seems as rope partner that's why he continued on with his solo climbing but it turns out it means he has no one to left behind like family. Afterall, in climbing there's no telling when will you die.
So when he is finally not alone, the mountain pushed him away by not protecting him anymore. It is no longer the place he should spend his life away. He doesnt need the comfort of the mountains anymore. He just pushed through one last time for all the times he spent his youth away to achieve this dream. He got it and moved on from the mountains. Now, he found his haven which is his family.
