I was a middle schooler when I read the manga. It has made me cry back then, and tonight at 02:03 in 2020, it has made me cry once more. It'll forever be a favorite, and I desperately want to have this series in my hands (to have the actual manga).
It's such a beautiful story, and it gives me a hint of hope for love, since I too, am not a very feminine girl like Ito, at the beginning. It's so beautiful.

I read this series in books. There's 3, and the ending. Oof. It breaks my heart. Other than that I really suggest this manga if you're looking for something short and with a good plot ish.

A super late response, but from what I remember. Picasso draws his last picture, that being a clock. He passes out, and it's up to his friends to figure stuff out. Turns out the last drawing is about Picasso's trauma, the death of his friend. His friends encourage him to come back, and his friend challenges him to do something, which involves him getting fired up and leaving. But then he regrets it and wants to stay, but his friend, stays in the picture and bids farewell to him. He wakes up, checks his front pocket, and it's a note of his friend with her drawn as an angel. Picasso makes a club near the river, and all his friends are in it.

I understand why there's a dislike for the age gap between Estelle and Emel (Emeil?). I personally don't like 3+ years of difference in a pairs' age, especially when they're developed when one of them is much older than the other (Example: 17 and 13. 9 and 14. Random numbers).
I don't support pedophilia whatsoever, I think it's disgusting and it shouldn't be praised at all. The yaoi community tends to do this A LOT. But I think we are interpreting the story wrong, as the majority of readers assume a healthy relationship should be immediately shipped.
When Estelle entered the manor, she was 11. Carlo is 4 years older than her, so he was 15 at the beginning. [At the coming of age for Estelle, she was 16. She talked about the coming of age for boys, that being when they turn 18. Estelle said that they had to hold back the coming of age for Carlo, due to closing the gates of the Castiello Manor. Carlo celebrated his coming of age when he was 20.]
I assume their father should be in his mid to late 30s in the beginning. Emel has been in the Black Wolves before Carlo was born. So immediately, we know he can't be older than 30, and younger than 15. We don't know the youngest age of being part of the Black Wolves, and I'm not sure at what age Emel joined the Castiello Manor. He can't be 16 or 17. Since Carlo would insult him by being close to his age. So we can safely bet, he's around 18-21 in the beginning.
I believe he said around 13, but I may be making up numbers in my head. Please correct me if you find the answer. For now, 13 isn't the answer due to not justifiable evidence.
Estelle would be 11, Carlo 15, Ein (Father) 30s. The artist draws faint lines under the eye bags of older people. An example would be the teacher. The teacher is a safe mid 30s in age, at the beginning. When we see the teacher again, when Estelle is in charge of the Castiello Household, he has lines underneath his eyes. We can assume he's in his 40s.
Why is it relevant? Emel is still very young. He doesn't have lines under his eye bags yet, he only gets them when he's in deep shock (When Estelle caught him discipling the rookie in secret) or when he's deeply worried/stressed about Estelle. The teacher is more human than the Duke and Carlo. He's the closest thing we have to having a lead, SOMEWHERE. And if we assume that the teacher is in his 40s, and we know that he's way older than Emel, we can guess that Emel is around half the teachers' age.
We can assume that when Estelle is 16, he could be in his mid 20s. When I mentioned that Emel could be around 18-21 at the beginning, adding 5 years to them would give us numbers in the mid 20s.
18 + 5 = 23
19 + 5 = 24
20 + 5 = 25
21 + 5 = 26
This would give us 7-10 years of difference between Estelle and Emel. Which is really iffy. BUT!! The story takes place where an 11 year old girl is capable of marrying, due to money/status issues. Where in the story was this mentioned??? Sasha. The light green haired friend of Estelle. Sasha has around the same age as Estelle, and she was almost wedded off to a man, due to money issues, that being that their family owned cursed lands.
Not to mention that we're reading this in a NOBLE character's POV. So money and status are important. So 7-10 of an age gap wouldn't be too weird in a political/wealth marriage.
Now, for the relationship Estelle and Emel have. At the beginning, Estelle was charmed by Emel. But that doesn't mean she has a crush on him in the start. She's called him attractive and a player, and told him he's capable of having many women's hearts, so we know that she finds him attractive. But she also wants him to protect her, and support her.
This could be a complex emotion of liking someone because they provide you a safe place/environment to be at. Estelle was abused and neglected the first 11 years of her life. It's something she struggles with from the beginning till this point. We know that she's not confident in herself. For not being a full Castiello, and for sometimes, being poor.
When you feel safe and free with someone, after being trapped in a box without the key, you crave the feeling of being wanted, loved, supported and protected. So I personally feel that she doesn't have any romantic feelings for him, for a year or 2.
Now, for Emel it's a bit different. He's a KNIGHT. In the most recent update, we know that the knights themselves know that it's wrong to fall for your master. We see it with Ren's teasing. Not to mention that he's a master, so he KNOWS that he can't fall for his masters. Emel looks like he's charmed by how different Estelle is, compared to her brother and father. We've read him telling Estelle that she's different, and that she gives the whole manor a new light. They both mutually love and care for each other in a non romantic type of way. I'm not sure when Emel grew feelings for her, as he's become clingy and sorta possessive over her.
When she gets hurt, he blames himself EXCESSIVELY. An example would be when she gets kidnapped by the wizard. He cares for her DEEPLY. She's his master, and he's her knight. Estelle has made it extremely obvious that she prefers Emel over the other knights. Emel is around 18-21, he should KNOW. He's not an idiot, nor is he oblivious. We can safely bet that he comes from nobility, but left due to unknown reasons.
I'm unclear when Emel officially started seeing Estelle in a different way. But we do know, that around 13-14, Estelle already had feelings for him, she just hid them. They didn't start liking each other at the very beginning, and if it was, it waa one sided, that being Estelle liking Emel.
It is funky that Emel is the Main Love Interest, since he practically 10 years older than her. But taking account that most ADULT couples both in real life and fictional, more real life, married couples and normal couples (bf and gf), are usually 5 years apart. And when a 20 year old marries a 30 year old, it's not too weird, the same thing with a 30 year old and a 40 year old. After the age of 18, it's legal, and after 20, you're pretty much set.
But this is just a theory,, A FANFICTION THEORY. Good night.
