im not too sure on the friendship aspect. The boys feel stagnant in their positions, neither of the main friends really going above and beyond to realize in full how shitty our main boy's mentality is. They keep glossing over it. I’d say it depends where you are. In the place I was being an exchange student, they were very open with physical affection but apparently in Tokyo (where the story is set) they are way more conservative, but still more open then the US
