I've read it somewhere a while ago that her father went mad and he destroyed the empire after losing her, ignoring the emperor's reins in him. I could be wrong but I believe it was in this story.
his dad is a master swordsman so he could do that. he only distanced himself from her to protect her so if she died he would go mad. this just shows how much he truly loves her. and also shows how much the emperor is stupid why would he throw the only thing that was keeping the duke from disobeying him.
