When Yashiro hits the office after the whole 'School Nurse' chapter - I'm snickering typing this. Goddamn that's the most elegantly written, precision comedic masterpiece! I can't read it without laughing the entire way through. Man I love this Manga. And, as it turns out - I can't go a week without coming back here; slinking in like a kid sneaking ice cream from the fridge at night. <3 I'm still laughing. There's so many 'levels' going on in that patch that's not 'good writing I'm in awe of *Yoneda Kuu*-Mangaka Skill Level: Galactic Shaman. Poor Yashiro: he's everything at once -frustrated, pissed off, confused and that pisses him off, and more than a little scared; he's been thrown for the biggest loop he's ever been thrown and proceeds to abuse everyone in his entire branch of Yakuza; and I'm over here, laughing. God, those chapters shine like diamonds.
Poor Yashiro really has had his life flip over, in just 3 months after decades of nursing an unrequited love and dealing with his past traumas in his unproductive, but familiar way. 3 MONTHS people, 3 months, he's been shot at on 3 occasions by Hirata's men and this stranger has confessed his eternal devotion to him, if Yashiro tells him to sit, he sits, if Yashiro abuses himself then this man tries to step in and seems caring. He has sex for the first time too really, which just triggers up his past abuse so throws himself into work. Yashiro has always been alone, in his perspective, so held rather push Doumeki away than risk losing him. Doumeki can't even stay away for 1 day though, so he likely has never met anyone who has such convictions towards him. Sorry for that train of thought post, but because we have to wait years for volumes it can sometimes be hard to remember how relatively short the actual timeline is!
Just to expand on this, obviously throughout his life Yashiro has experienced "devotion", but this is the first time someone is devoted to him, for the person he is, and actually is showing care for him. As opposed to say his subordinates who are devoted to him as their boss, and because of the family. Or others who are devoted to him, but indulged Yashiro when he wanted to self harm like Ryuuzaki, Misumi and Hirata's man that he said "treated him like his woman". Ryuuzaki tries to protect Yashiro as a 36 year old, he stayed behind to keep an eye on the 19 year old Yashiro, getting him a cloth to clean up etc even saying that "it would have been easier if he were a woman, then I could have protected him" to paraphrase, Misumi took Yashiro into the family, he made him his son, gave him the status and opportunity of being a group boss, but he still didn't seem to have the same emotional care that Doumeki has shown, Misumi too at the start physically abused Yashiro when Yashiro requested for it. Whereas Doumeki won't indulge Yashiro, he doesn't comply to his orders to hurt him, but shows loyalty and respect in a more genuine way. This ofcourse is something Yashiro has managed to avoid, someone who essentially loves him, not for the person he pretends to be, but for the person he is. A lifetime of being pitied, being mocked or being feared then to have someone who says he is worthy of care essentially is freaking Yashiro out, and he tries to run away from Doumeki and this emotion, rather than risk, as he sees it the greater risk, of having to deal with ending up feeling rejected and being aware of the reality of loneliness again, something that he has managed to shield himself from from decades.

I can't believe I did a total re-read and will probably do another before the END of July - omg this series always wrecks me for manga/anime for days ... nothing compares.
*sigh*
Guys, I see talk about anime ... I wouldn't want this made into an anime because it would get so whitewashed/homogenized not one of us would recognize it.
This story is ultimate because all its' layers, implications are in tact all carried by the art and humor. I wouldn't trust anyone to mess with this. No one.
Or all the times, after Yashiro gets worked up about Kagema he went to Doumeki to distract himself and rely on him. Like the scene where he gets frustrated that Kagema thinks he is pitiful because of his past child abuse, and that he thinks he is still emotionally stuck there .... Yashiro takes Doumeki to the cinema, and then allows himself to fall asleep on Doumeki's shoulder.
This series and Jealousy are probably my most re-read too! Yashiro and Rogi are just interesting, complex characters and the plot with this one, has all these wee details that seem quite irrelevant at first, but as you said, they all add up into forming this quite tangled plot that tackles the quite hard subject of trauma, showing how different characters manage their trauma.
Misumi making a comment that Yashiro has never had sex with anyone he loves (which seemed to make Yashiro a bit upset), then all Doumeki could think was "oh he hasn't slept with Kagema then". I think it was before this when Yashiro ended up getting upset because Doumeki mentioned that Kagema was the person he (Yashiro) was on about when he was talking about only ever feeling love for one person, because he said he didn't want Doumeki to see that side of him.
It's interesting the comment Kagema made about Yashiro's lack of emotional growth, as although he obviously has matured, it seems Yashiro still retains some of those defense or coping mechanisms he used as a kid. (Ignoring the obvious one) things like deflecting conversations that become too personal, brushing everything off with sarcasm, having apathy to the severity of just how awful situations are just because he doesn't want to be regarded as a "victim" and pitied.
Whoa. Excellent insights! I'm over here gloating for days but can't think how to phrase it - Yashiro's honesty *is* obscene ... he can't be dominated, intimidated, used (well okay used but he's the one topping the use) ... and what is Yakuza all about if not control and nobody has that over Yashiro ... but I can't say it better ... yet. Kind of along your train of thought about his getting upset with Domeki's insights - insights are his downfall because he's built a solid wall between himself and what happens to his body that it's dangerous as all get out to permeate. I can't phrase it better but is in my head and YES shares that with Rogi Uichi (omg you think I'm nuts about this update wait WAIT until chapter 9 Jealousy comes online I'll have to be sedated) both using that as their shield it *is* honest, but because of it is also obscene and they throw that in everyone's face...
Also, the Gouda group & Sanwakai group were first mentioned here
