I went to the novel and picked a random chapter called breakup hoping I would get something.
Well what was happening in this chap is: khaol talks to river about forest, basically she was a reincarnation of Delilah that had a non-romantic relationship with khaol a century ago, she is the same she was and values freedom so would never marry a god.
Rivers starts saying that he understands that Khaol will ever belittle humans and he will never respect him and never be worthy his time. He talks about how he is inconstant because he's a human and that someone like Khaol will live long and forget about him. But that there he was trying so hard to make Khaol be happy and hating him so much when he was angry or disrespectfully and even hating himself for be holding in a obviously unhealthy relationship. Khaol try saying that even though he's a single human he is his human but...
In the middle of the conversation they talk about an occurrence that we didn't see yet and that was an big point on the downfall of their relationship: apparently Khaol manipulates River's memory, I don't know why, they didn't say why but for what I understood Khaol wanted River to see just the good parts and forget of all their problems. River is really and at it and this happens:
"I know. It was... It was wrong"
But his eyes betrays the lie coming out of his mouth. "You don't. You think it's convenient to glamour me."
He gives a slight nod that's almost go unnoticed. "I definitely thought it'd be easier. But I regretted it. I regretted everything."
"Show me an example of one happy god and human union".
River asks if there's something he can do to khaol releases he's family and Khaol say no, HE LITTERALY SAYS THAT HE CANNOT DO ANYTHING. I was panicking at this time because I knew what was coming. So River agrees, giving up on trying to change Khaol, and says he still os going to ask. Khaol says to him not ask things like that. At this point he is described with a short hair and normal clothes, he is angry and panicking and he is more affected than River for all this. Rive says: " Please. I've lived my whole life thinking that I'm less. Thinking that I can't be more than this. I need more. I want to be more. And I can't do that if I'm with you"
Khaol hugs him and a tear falls, nobody knows whom it was but then he kiss River and makes he reflect that he loved Khaol for not long but intensely and that if he let it continue he will just accept this life of agreements and not wanting more, not wanting to know the truth. So he put his hand on his chest and stops him. Khaol is perplexed so River asks one more time "Is there any way to you to cut ties with my family" Khaol starts to cry and and nod "Goodbye"
This means that the brides sustained his power and his curse and breaking up with River and not sending another bride the curse will be released and Khaol will lose his power, consequently dying in pain.
I don't know if Heil and River will be together but there will be a season 3 so... let's see.
