This shit WORKS because they acknowledge literally EVERYTHING you would have a problem with. Everything that is even remotely iffy can either be explained with character's personalities or just DIRECTLY saying it. And not like bs "but he was in debt" excuses, like actually genuine human reasons that would happen.
Even the assault which is fucking terrible was a reason for them to have an actual conversation. Not only did they acknowledge that it was terrible by pointing out how blond guy criticizes in in BL, but some necessary conversations do need a point where someone just breaks. Terrible how it happened BUT THEY FUCKING ACKNOWLEDGED IT OMFG DO YOU KNOW HOW REFRESHING THAT IS?!?
