after seeing him so shocked it kinda made me think of him differently. like yes manipulative but more like experimental. he really wanted to see if the name thing was actually fate or psychosomatic. and so he ran the experiment with himself since he saw the opportunity there. i think he thinks hes actually pretty apathetic to the outcome, that he doesnt care either way and just wants to find out for himself. so i think he realized that by saying he may not be his friend anymore would fuck up the results by putting pressure on mc so he wanted to eliminate that being a factor once and for all. but also, he def knew that by forcing him to make a choice he'd get more insight into what direction they were headed towards. i personally think that subconsciously he really likes mc too, so once he got confirmation that it was leaning more towards romance than disgust, he pounced. he probably won't realize he likes mc until hurting him with the truth is unavoidable unfortunately maybe his plan is that they'll have sex and he'll just pretend to discover it for the first time and then boom probablem solved and hypothesis confirmed
