Most of yall might find it weird cuz yeah, the duke did technically raise him. BUT he did his best, distanced himself from the boy, gave the boy freedom to choose (turned him down multiple times) but nope in the end the boy still ‘chose’ the duke and that’s perfectly fine because he is of Age, and finally has the mental capacity to make decisions clearly for himself . So no, i do not associate this with ‘grooming’ but more of an unrequited love that finally came true and it’s beautiful.
I also feel he raised him with pure intentions. Sure, he had this longing for the adult Alois but he begun raising him with legit curiosity of "why older me loves this guy?" Then it was as you said, he did his best to keep distance and set him free.
