He totally deserved whatever pain he got and will receive. The author just did a fantastic job with showing his POV. That doesn't change that he neglected FL all this time. He must live with guilt, and consequences like how FL will never tell him she loves him.
Anyway, this man is a dragon. He literally admitted that he was too childish to deny his fate and that costed him his mate's life. Indifference was his sin, he also admitted it TOO LATE and lost her. That's why he turned back time with a heavy consequence attached.
Personally if she makes him work for her love everyday of her life until her last breath she could have her payback from his indifference.
The best way to get back to him is to live her current life for herself with him chasing behind her. Which is what the black dragon hopes.
