The writing has "sympathy" for the characters, in the sense that their motives, how their thought processes are shaped, are shown and told to the reader to analyze the situation and the root of every cause and effect of "events".
Loneliness is indeed a powerful feeling, one that can affect the entirety of someone's life and their personal outlook and values. Loneliness has more capicity and power than the human brain.
Everyone in the story are victims, but abuse, rape, etc, can never be justified.
What is done is done, the effect stays and never goes away, it all depends on what one has left, whats in front of us, and what the human mind has shaped and formed the situation into.
The ending feels painfully realistic.
