Natsume yuujinchou is an anime about a highschool boy named Takashi Natsume who can see yokai/spirits since he was little kid. Because of his parents passing away when he was a young child, he got passed around his relatives. Basically being neglected and mentally abused.
He eventually gets taken in by distant relatives of his father's side, the Fujiwara's. He promises himself that this time he won't let him seeing yokai effect his life and he tries to keep it lowkey. Which is basically impossible because the yokai keep chasing him.
He owns something named "The book of friends" which belonged to his late grandmother Reiko Natsume. She too was always alone due to the fact she could see yokai. But she was spiritually extremely strong and would always challenge the yokai to a fight.
Basically she won and would enslave them but not really they would wright down their names and she would put it in the book of friends which mean the would now serve her. But she never called upon any of them. anyways Takashi is the same as her, spiritually strong, but he doesn't know how to use it.
Upon being chased he accidentally breaks a seal releasing a yokai named madara, which he later ends up calling nyanko-sensei. Sensei tries to eat Natsume, Natsume beats him up. Sensei says he wants to use the book of friends so he can control the smaller and weaker yokai.
Natsume refuses and says that if he can return the names he would like to do so. And that if he ends up dying that sensei can have the book of friends.
It's a really beautiful anime, slice of life and sometimes really emotional
But it's so interesting and amazing and also really funny i'd really recommend watching it!
