In the beginning I had my doubts for the first seme. But I think at the end he helped a person by breaking his cycle of having relationships who only saw him as casual sex (and one-sided at that). He actually cared about him but he is not a lovey-dovey character. He is harsh and rude and tough but that's why he managed to help the uke and become his partner.

I think they love each other. But especially the seme let's say is a peculiar character (rough and edgy). You can have a rather bad character bbut still love someone. But as you say your partner have to tolerate you if he loves you back and wants to stay with you.
