Yeah...it may not focus on them regarding their interactions. But Leo is still the MC. It will still mainly focus on her and her antics. Leo is still the center of focus, and even if she isn't present. Her influence is still felt...(⌒▽⌒)

I think the author is going for the shock value Ai's death achieved. But at the same moment, history repeating takes something from it. It is a choice but what is the point then? Does the circle close or another loop of Aqua's revenge starts? Or is he going to manage to save her and atone his guilt for being unable to save Ai? I guess we will have to wait and see.
