Well. I'm glad I was warned about the sequel (Paradise View), which I WILL NOT READ. Nope. I don't do tragedy and I don't do unhappy endings.
For this one... it was okay. I didn't like the distance and I don't think they tried hard enough, frankly. The mangaka set it up to be a GOOD story, but I didn't feel for the characters like I think I should have. I liked them, but I felt like they only gave a half-hearted attempt at actually trying to make the relationship work. Hideo couldn't look for work in Kyoto? Kyoto was the ONLY university with a medical program? Forced plot points. So, no.
I'll be skipping the other stories by this mangaka, esp since I know at least one is a bad ending.
I appreciate that. :) I have just made it a policy that I don't read unhappy endings. I feel there's plenty of tragedy out there in the world, and I don't read it and I don't write it. I figure there are others that can appreciate those works and other authors who can write them (likely much better than I since I don't like to). I absolutely respect other people's tastes and preferences. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. It's just not for me. :)
The problem with the sequel is , as stated above, the extra. As a sequel, it's great. Their relationship grows and so do the characters. It adds a realistic side to the story and you have a happy ending (a very fulfilling one to boost) and then an unnecessary extra comes along and it feels like the drop from a rollercoaster. I really don't know what the mangaka's was thinking with that extra, since this story is more about cuteness, so it sorta feels outta place. So my advice would be for you to read the sequel and skip the extra. It would be kind of a waste not to read it.
yeah i wished I knew about the very last part
Why is it so hard to just give a solid ending? No more of this maybe or might kind of thing. I liked the extra at the end but it's titled "my brother comes back sometimes." Like... why? Grrr. (Also, I'm still kinda pissed at the older brother. Cluing the younger in, then going back to Tokyo and still staying? WTF?)

Talks about what happens with them. :)
I don't read sad stories as a rule, especially not those that make me bawl like a little baby but this manga, especially the OVA, makes me bawl every time. I actually think, out of all of it, the first episode, toward the end, where he's crying and apologizing... I feel like they ripped my heart out, it was so hard to watch. But I love it. So so so much.
Just one more page showing them meeting in Germany would have been enough, though he SHOULD have told Dou directly. That was a cowardly dick move, frankly. :/
