I'd argue it's more intentional since most spousal/dating murders used a weapon (mostly firearms, sometimes knives); the strangling is more like a "they're willing to go that far" kind of sign
i know everyone hates the ex cuz she made him go to the party but like...
she wanted him to go to protect her from a hostile person and she called him after she just got shoved to the ground and shit talked by said drunk dude she needed protecting from;;; like god forbid a woman have communicated needs
then after she just wanted to know more about him and his feelings because she didn't want to fuck him over again like she did with the test preps or party (because "i don't like crowds, why we gotta be in packs sigh" is NOT the same as "i wish i could support you but i get bad anxiety in situations like those") and he gave her nothing but an "i don't care to know you"
