The father's annoying tbh. Literally ignored her for most her life and now he wants to try to show that he cares? Mmmk.

The father cares deeply for her. Firstly, he really doesn't know how to show it or express. Second, the shitbag of an emperor/king is using his daughter as a noose around his neck to keep him in line. So, by not showing her too much favor he's protecting her. The only reason he favored her ex was because SHE picked him. Now that she's done with the ex he's cold as ice to him (small spoiler). He really does care for her, and has ways of showing it. Spoiler below:
The dagger he gave her in the book's timeline was to defend herself. He then went to the crown prince and begged for his help, pledging his assistance to his cause if the CP would get her out. Unfortunately she misinterprets the intentions because of everything and kills herself. The father then GOES INSANE and KILLS EVERYONE in his grief. He cares, he's just awkward and trying to protect her.

I get that he probably does care about her (yea I figured it was used to protect herself) and the emperor is using her as leverage over him but literally now he wants to eat dinner with her or wants to take her outside? Over these 18 yrs he couldn't show not an ounce of care or interest in her? I just get annoyed cuz the situation isn't different now. The emperor is still using her as leverage but now her dad's suddenly able to show interest. Idk if my explanation makes sense lol

Yes! It totally makes sense! I mean I don't hate him because he literally does not know how his daughter perceives him but that has nothing to do with how he also literally ignored her all those years yet somehow seems to think a broken relationship can be mended just like that? And now he acts like everything is hunky dory even though everything... is still pretty much the same as before?
I figured out that the sword was meant to protect her too. That didn't make a difference to me, since most stories like this use exactly this kind of plot device to suggest the person given that weapon should kill themselves, especially when the one giving it was someone who totally ignored the pleas of his daughter and refused to give any explanation for it. THEN the Crown Prince, who apparently likes to torture people, appears in front of her and seemingly suggests that he's not going to kill her but instead torture her until she wants to die. A weapon like that would especially come in handy to prevent a well established Duke's family from being embarrassed if she killed herself before being tortured to the point she admitted to a crime she didn't commit. Of COURSE she's going to kill herself.
Still holding out hope that someday this will get picked up
same here T^T
