Ya I literally didn't see what the issue was, it isn't really that big of a deal. The point was that he still meant those words but he was jus taking inspiration from places that can relay those feelings better. Unpopular opinion: I wish this was an even slower burn and that we didn’t proceed with a madly in love ML plotline so quickly. In the beginning I saw two people who had been with eachother from childhood— and although Carcel disliked her he also never imagined a life without Inez on the simple principle that he’s just known her forever (same for her.) I think if he were jealous in that weird co-dependent/betrothed since childhood way and not in a “I love Inez so much!” way it would be much more compelling.
That complex balance of disliking someone but also seeing them as intrinsically part of your life is so interesting… I would’ve liked to see a story where he and Inez have reasons not to like eachother very much but since they’re both nice people they still keep up their responsibilities to eachother, try to help eachother, and work as a team for this arranged marriage and then actually fall for each other little by little from this camaraderie. I feel like it’s more authentic that way.
Right now it feels like Carcel literally just likes her body. He barely talks about anything else and to be fair he has nothing else to go by except a fake smile she gives people.
I think there were opportunities to get her to HAVE to open up that just haven’t been explored either… like in her past life she was constantly worried about her figure— maybe she always refuses desserts in this life but Carcel notices she really likes them when she can have them and gets her something nice or finds a low calorie dessert that won’t be too triggering to enjoy until she can get out of that mindset altogether.
She is Inez and she’s sharp as a whip and incredibly traumatized but she’s still Inez… she’s a person who still has random likes and dislikes, quirks, sayings, habits, random interests, and favorite forms of entertainment that she has no reason to hide even if she’s reserved. Those are all things to fall in love with… (And Carcel is like “Her smile with her friends is giving me a hard on : ]!” )
I think Inez could’ve been characterized a bit better too now that I’m writing this.
Surely she didn’t spend every single waking hour of her life to work on the plan… that’s not realistic no matter how big the stakes are.

I’ve found that a lot of manga or webcomics that have black characters that have big exaggerated lips that often look worse than in this and in popular mainstream comics and anime. I honestly think most of the artist don’t know how to draw black characters and then copied off of other racist drawings of black people. The amount of non racist looking I’ve drawings of black people I have found been very few in in mangas and webcomics. If they are in webcomics it’s mainly one that was created by an POC or created by some not in South Korea or Japan. I’ve just hope that more artist would do their research and create better looking black characters.

I’m okay with having sensitive topics and morally grey characters.This story tho portrays this particular topic in a way that makes it seem like the author’s agreeing with or saying the characters actions is no big deal. Lazy writing that just makes the author seem like a weirdo. Also it’s so damn boring, same old shit. A character being more nuanced (than evil guy doing evil shit cause he’s the devil + gets the girl in the end) is much more interesting. To me, criticism about this story and character is completely valid. I only excuse this type of thing in a smut manga, still weird but I’m not gonna complain about a story where 80% of the plot is sex.

I got the impression he was amused he’d sooner jump to the conclusion that he was a eunuch rather than trans. He also specifically says “you think you need the RIGHT parts” vs “you think you need X to be a man?” Implying Swallowtail has different parts. Then they talk about “open mindedness” which is clearly a cheeky jab at people IRL.
In addition the artist has made gay main characters in the past so I’m prone to believe that him being trans is a large possibility. Maybe he’s a eunuch but nothing that’s happened in chapter 22 makes me think that over him being trans
Yes, the artist has made gay characters before. However, with context clues within the scene in chapter 22 we can gather that Swallowtail is indeed a eunuch. During the time period this is based in, although fictional, he would not be intact while also being Yuhua's personal servant.
The jab about open mindedness was definitely for the readers for sure, due to what Leng Feng had just said about him not having all his parts anymore. Since it was rude to assume just because he had his removed he's no longer a man, and that even without them anyone could be a man if that is what they identify as.
Linguistically it makes more sense that he’s trans. He talks about having “correct” equipment not about having any equipment in general. Open-mindedness is also usually a nod to taking a more progressive stance on political issues. If the only real argument (so far) for him being a eunuch, is that this is a historical piece that’s a fairly weak one since this is already pretty inaccurate: women holding positions of power, etc.
It COULD go either way but I think it’s much likelier that the author is just suspending belief in order to include a trans character.

As for historical accuracy (and I am no historian by any stretch), I do believe women did hold some positions of power, but like I said before this is fictional AND a fantasy so I don't know what liberties she's taking on the history aspect.

In the beginning I was soooo irritated with Cliff. Yes the author has influence but something about a man getting man at a woman who has 0 influence over who she’s marrying rubs me wrong. He has ALL the power! but knowing what we know now, knowing that Cliff thinks she’s giddy about having forced him into a marriage makes his reaction a lot more understandable. Idk when you think about how she must look to others it changes things a bit and makes for more understandable character choices… one of my top isekai irks is characters acting too extreme or being inconsistent based on what is needed in that moment and I thought that smoothed it over nice
