The student was in love with the teacher from the beginning and pretended to be a smoker to tricked the teacher into thinking he had the upper hand so that way the teacher could "blackmail" him into doing sexual things. Five years later, the teacher couldn't forget about the student and basically was trying to figure out how to get the student back into a position he could have the upper hand. Once the teacher realised he couldn't, the teacher confessed he loved him and wanted him which is exactly what the student wanted. And once he kissed the student a few more times and hated the taste of the cigarette he realised everything. That the student didn't really smoke and basically set the teacher up to fall in love with him

I'm wondering if sensei truly did mold nina in his image and that's why he turned out like that. Or nina was just that good in his manipulation of what he wanted, which was sensei. Bc that look he gives when he sees sensei distressing about it leaves me questioning. Like he had the expectation to be a good and clean student of course. But was that actually him at the core? All I know is he for sure did incite nina's smoking habit.
Hi! I do believe Nina was actually a good and clean student and that his personality was molded after the relationship with sensei. When discussing it 5 years later, Nina recognizes it was hard for him and that he didn't expected sensei to be that awful. That's why Sensei looks in pain in that page, because he felt hé did something without repair to him. The look Nina gave him was because even with that hard treatment, Nina liked how he changed himself after meeting sensei. When he talked about the expectations of others, he mentioned he fell in love with sensei because he told him to cut some cornets. As someone who has been in the same "expectations" situation, I can tell you that you can be someone "good and clean" hoping to find the chance to be set free (a.k.a. the perfect excuse to change yourself or to start being a disappointment to some). Once you find that someone or something you get attached to them. I believe Nina was actually good and clean but wished to be something else.
