I personally think that it was partly the initial momentum from BJ Alex. My other guess is that it could be that people initially read it for the art, saw that the seme was shit, but have retained some sort of morbid curiosity which prevents them from dropping it [literally why I read it] , and want to genuinely see how on earth the seme could be redeemed. Just my suspicions though.
