It's 3 am and I'm learning about cakeverse ( ̄∇ ̄")

    mijiji June 3, 2024 7:06 pm

And before learning about cakeverse, I was reading "Please have a meal", an adventure fantasy cooking manhwa where the MC literally can't taste irl. But a new immersive game gave him the chance to taste and smell again. He's a chef irl and in the game. Now everytime he can't taste anything, I'm reminded of cakeverse

The refined sugar we now know and love, had such a long history. The affordable sugar we have today wasn't so affordable back then, especially in Europe. It was a luxury, a rarity that only the high class can afford.

There are two types of sugar that comes from plants that are largely produced today. The most well known is sugar cane that comes from "the south". They mentioned southerners, and they're probably referring to Asians, specifically in India because that's where the sugar cane was first refined into sugar. The other one being sugar beets. However, for the longest time, sugar cane was the only sugar source in the world.

When sugar was first introduced to Queen Elizabeth I, she instantly loved the sweet taste. Before sugar, the only sweetener they had were honey or barley. So this "sweet salt" or "white gold" as Europeans called it, became a symbol of luxury. It was so rare that only the high class could afford to get it. Sugar became an introduction to capitalism.

They could not cultivate sugar canes in Europe because the plant needed a hot and humid environment to grow, like the environment in india and Brazil. Therefore they could only get sugar by importing from other countries.

Wars were fought because of sugar, someone (I forgot who) wanted to monopolize the sugar importation and tried to block the imports to other countries.

Years and years later, a German Chemist discovered that sugar beets had the same sugar that sugar cane have, sucrose. They tried to extract and refine it to look like the sugar crystals but had no luck. But this was a start. They finally found a sugar plant that their environment can handle. They introduced it to the US and the americans successfully managed create refined sugar from the sugar beets. Which was an amazing discovery.

So, from my understanding, in this manhwa, the reason why the sugar beet plant can cause wars is because of how rare sugar is. By successfully cultivating the plant, they can make sugar not out of sugar canes but from sugar beets. They could make tons and tons of money just by producing sugar!

Alright, that's what I know. You can research more if you are curious. What I have shared might be incomplete or wrong. But the gist is that sugar can make you a lot of money. Money is economy. Economy is political. Capitalism and monopolizing the rights to sugar is very political.

Thank you for explaining! Can you please clarify one more thing. I know wolf will benefit but is the prime minister gonna have conflict with him because of it?

Thank you for explaining! Can you please clarify one more thing. I know wolf will benefit but is the prime minister gonna have conflict with him because of it? Sugasan

If you're talking about prime minister rat (Honestly, I've forgotten who this is), based on the latest chapter, he's a nobility from the south who monopolizes the sugar production. If sugar production increases, his money decreases because there will be more supply. So conflict is bound to happen. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
