His father was missing in the picture so perhaps he was dead? And since his mom didn't want to come to see him anymore, I would say she had a partner who didn't like kids. He appeared to be staying with his aunt who couldn't take care of his basic needs like food. His aunt said, "Make sure you listen to your uncle. Save up your money." This indicates that he had a job and it was probably one in his uncle's shop. Page 93 as seen below supports this theory.
