Because he had been so damaged and he did all this for his brother which had taken a toll on his mental health and living all these years under his boss has been already damaging him. He just can't accept that for what he did all these is for nothing and he could've run away and lived better. Wasted all his life for nothing so the trauma is refusing him to accept that he doesn't have a brother. He is trying to forget it and living as he has. I think knowing it has given him more mental trauma and a bit paralysed to the boss
