because in a sense it's like a waste of money (to them at least). it's like saying you're going to do a chore and then when you're about to do it, someone just finished it, even though you said you were going to do it. does that make sense? or at least that's how I think it would feel, idk I'm not an uploader

The person who was uploaded over them was a troll of sorts who would only upload one chapter and then no more. But this uploader was maybe translating and fixing that chapter but all their hard work went to dusk as someone already did it. It's rude and they ask them if this was dropped to begin with

In the scanlation community, there's two types of uploaders. Those who will dedicate themselves to a series, making sure it'll be translated fully. And those who are impatient, thus will only translate a few chapters, before dropping the series. When another translator uploads over someone else, it's called sniping, and it's considered bad manners due to the reasons stated by beyonceBL and datass. What usually happens in these scenarios is that the readers either help the original scanlators get rid of the snipers by complaining and chastising them (and sometimes reporting their work, depending on the reading platform). The other scenario is that readers don't really care nor understand why it's a bad thing, since faster chapters is good for them, right? So the original translator loses their motivation, or gets annoyed, so they officially drop the series. You'd think the snipers would adopt the series themselves when that happens, but they normally also drop the series soon after. This leaves the series without a translator and no updates into the forseeable future, sometimes it even sinks into obscurity. Then we have to wait on luck for some scanlators to hopefully pick up the series and dedicate themselves to translating it regularly.

Scanlating versus just uploading a series you bought are two different things tho

In the scanlation world yes sniping is looked down on because people actually work on chapters with translation, typsetting, cleaning, proofing; sometimes it can take teams of 2 or more people weeks or even months for one chapter

buying a chapter just to upload it somewhere else is just no where near the same; and while i understand it can be annoying.. they dont really have grounds to be upset if someone else buys it and chooses to upload it quicker.

Especially with series as popular as this one, even if they decide not to upload anymore someone else will

True, it's not much work to just buy the chapter and upload it somewhere. I'd even say that's not really scanlation then, since no translation work has taken place. But it's not that they couldn't upload it quicker, the OG scanlator withheld chapters because she wanted to wait around 2-3 days after its original release, to encourage people to support the author and buy the most recent chapter legally. And that strategy doesn't really work when others upload over you. So formally, they don't have any ground to be upset, but informally they do have that right. Anyways, the scanlator scene is a wild west without any formal rules nor formal enforcement methods. It's just kinda sad.

I suppose. Scanlating is actually quite difficult there’s alot of politics when it comes to claiming series to work on (esp bl). Ive been on various teams over the years and there is almost always drama. There’s been whole teams bullied for working on a manga thats hasn't been updated in years because another team still has claims and you after to go through a whole email process which sucks.

That aside, I understand that it’s frustrating for the uploader and I appreciate why their trying to do for the creatorN Love Shuttle is one of my faves, I personally buy the chapters myself as well but I like coming over to the Mangago Comment section hehe

Unfortunately these things come with the territory. Even if they scold the person that uploaded over them now; that not gonna stop someone else from doing it. Getting heated over it solves nothing and I think just makes more stress. Plus as shitty as it is to say; we gotta be honest with that fact that most people just wanna read the chapter no matter who uploads it/the reasons for uploading it. I do wish them luck tho, its not easy.

wow, even for series that hasn't been updated in years?? In my opinion, someone's claim on something should end if they haven't updated it in 4-6 months after the original chapter has been released. I don't know much about the bl scene, but in my opinion series like Lala no kekkon is up for dibs, as it hasn't been updated for almost 9 months now, in spite of the scanlators saying in their Discord that they haven't dropped it yet. I waited years just for Demon Sacred to be completed (since they only updated it once a year or something), and series like Kaze Hikaru hasn't been updated since 2017 and may never be. Adopting series is just healthy for the community and shouldn't be hit down upon. I haven't been involved with a team, but I have individually MTL-ed chapters for my own enjoyment before. It really varies what people's motivations are for joining the scanlation scene, and I don't really support all the reasons.

I agree, I hope it settles soon without too much drama, and hopefully no bullying. I don't really like it, but the law of the jungle involves bullying as the way to enforce the "law" in the scanlation community. And it doesn't really help that there's no universal set of rules for all scanlators to follow. (Which may make the fights even less civil in some cases.) She's made a notice at least, and does seem to take it very nicely.
