so kind of spoiler...
but this is angst with a happy ending. they couple loves each other so much but it's just a stupid misunderstanding. the novel has a main part and then a second part from the husband's perspective and other side characters as well. The wife loves the husband and thinks she's getting in the way of his happiness because of his cousin and his rumoured relationship. She acts like a bad woman trying to get a divorce so that the husband can pursue his so called lover. the husband is also hurting because he loves the wife so much but she is treating him coldly in order for him to divorce her. there was so much misunderstanding, tears, and drama until their happy ending but it's there! After reading the novel i kind of blame the cousin and the butler who turns out to be the one the cousin likes. They knew the main couple's misunderstanding with each other but selfishly keeps them in the dark. Don't get me wrong, they're not mean or "bad" characters or villains but the misunderstanding stems also from them (and obviously the clear lack of communication).

Im still reading the novel but what she doing is her plan from the start. She was born between a noble and a prostitute. When her mother passed away from the epidemic, then the noble father took her back home and treat her as slave. Her life was miserable until one day the father wanted her to get marriage to Orpheus for money.
On the day they met, he told her about his cousin's situation and ask if she would let her live together with them. Ophelia felt empathy for the girl who lost her parents due to epidemic and her eyes, also got abandoned by her fiance which was worse than what happen to her. And through their conversation, she thought that they would be better off with each other.
They didnt have a grand married party. She just simply came to his house and sign the paper. So, Diana (his cousin) and Opheus came out to great her. Diana even explained that they are not in that kind of relationship (even though Ophelia doesnt think about it lol). However, the attitude of the servants were very bad when they looked at the three, so she thought that because of her (her father's greed) that make these two people cannot be with each other.
At night, Opheus and Ophelia talked about each other past and the reason why he married her. Opheus's father loved Ophelia's mother (well i dont know what happen as i didnt finish the novel yet). When Ophelia's mother died, he was one step late than that father noble of her to take her in. He found out that she was treated as slave and tried to find a way to save her life. However, he passed away before he could do it, so he told Opheus to get married to Ophelia. Opheus offered invested money to her father in order to marry her. She feels really bad for him to marry her due to his father's wish. She promised to do everything for him to repay for what he has beared by cannot be together with the one he loves, Diana (this is what she assumes in her head)
Opheus told her about his past. He told her that he doesnt have noble blood. He is not the real son. He was adopted by the noble father. His father married a girl who has black hair that looked like Ophelia's mother. They had a son and named him Opheus. However, the son died young and the wife became mad. Opheus was born in abusive family. He was sold as slave or play toy for noble, and the father bought him due to his look is similar to the late son. The father treated him liked his real son. At first, the wife became better but as he got older, she realized he not her son and went mad and died. Only a few people knew his past. Opheus even told her about his real name that Diana didnt know. Ophelia feel closer to him as their past was similar.
Opheus is a very good man. He treated her well. He didnt even touch her on their first night because he was worried about her health (you know driving long time in carriage). They ate dinner together, went out, took a walk... She tried to avoid to have the first night with him due to her conscience for Diana lol, so Opheus asked if she had someone she liked (at this part I dont know if they did it or not, the translation was confusing but Opheus kinda mad). She just said she doesnt want to have children right now because the rate is high for premature as she is still young or something.
Diana is a very kind and bright girl. She helps Ophelia with alot of thing. Thats the reason why Ophelia feel even worse for meddling between the two. Therefore, the more she became close to Opheus the more she feel bad for Diana. So she decided that she would do anything as his wife to not affect his reputation liked maintain the estate, take care of the house and then someday she would leave in silent and let the two become happy.
At first she didnt become a woman liked right now. She was earnest and hard working. However I think because the rumor about Opheus and Diana was so bad, she decided to stained her reputation to make the two look better so that people can understand why Opheus choose the kind Diana instead of her because she was gold digger lol. She wasted money on clothes and jewelry. She bullied the servants and demand the unreasonable things. She even has a lover. Well, the lover is a talent artist whom she donated money to help him out. They are friend. He was gay and know about her situation that she love her husband but want her husband to be with the one he loves. He told her to become a greedy woman so that Opheus might get tired of her and divorced. He told her to come live with him after divorce as she has no place to go. There is one servant who knows about this and help her with the acting. (〜￣△￣)〜

it's like each character has some fault where you want to smack their head and make them open their eyes to the truth that is literally in front of their face but they have so many redeeming factors as well. truthfully, the male lead is a great guy, they just started off on the wrong foot with bad communication. the female lead has self esteem issues and is warped by her upbringing that has broken down her self worth hence she has this self sacrifice attitude approach towards her marriage and loved ones. these are two broken people coming together to form a marriage. given the unideal environment to start a marriage (gossiping servants who spread the rumour that ml and diana is in a relationship, diana the major factor for the misunderstanding, and the servants who treat the fl coldly because of diana) its given that there would be major ups and downs.
honestly read it through google translate but if i am right with my assumptions, i think it's after they confess everything to each other. cause from the side stories and extra povs in the ml's view, it seems that prior, he could not and would not touch her as she showed strong disdain towards him. to the point that he's scared to reach out only to be rejected again. but the author also never really clarified a first night scene （￣へ￣）

She thought Orpheus was just obeying his father's will so he was being kind to her, and Diana is a very kind girl so thats why she treated her well ╮(￣▽￣)╭ Whenever Ospheus wanted to talk with her, she refused it or argued with him. Thats why when the situation got worse after she hurts Diana to make him mad and divorced her, then they told her the truth that Diana only stay here because she love Ospheus's servant. It was forbidden love between noble and servant so thats why they have to hide it.

i think it's explained in the second part of the novel where the author does a few scenes from the ml's pov. but this is actually the saddest and most facepalm misunderstanding ever because him and diana were actually talking about the fl when he smiled so happily. Both ml and diana thinks that the fl is a great girl and they really like her. they were discussing about what a great person ophelia is and ml happened to think of something adorable she did and smiled super affectionately while the cousin teased him about the deep love he has for his wife! Σ(っ°Д °;)っ when i read this i was honestly caught between laughter, tears, and a major face palm moment.

The painful part of this novel is about how both of them love each other but just keep hurting the other (〜￣△￣)〜 but after the misunderstanding was solve then its actually cute and sweet

actually he did try to multiple times to stop her and even confronted the 'lover' but was given an insight into her plan. rather than her getting a real lover, having a bisexual fake lover is safer. and he tried to clean up behind the scenes but what the fl wants is a bad reputation in private and public so that when the ml and cousin gets together, no one would blame them (she wants that because she loves the ml and likes the cousin as she is very 'kind'). but totally agree! If they just talked to each other and actually listened to what the other was saying then this can all be avoided.
