That’s understandable but I don’t think he did it to take advantage of the situation. He’s an air head and has never fallen in love before. When he thought she was dead he was very afraid and relieved when he saw her- most likely that his emotions took over him and he did it on the spur of the moment. He backed off afterwards though, which I think means more.
