But seriously. This might rub some people the wrong way and I've been hated on this opinion before but I HATE this damn plot device of, "I can't make him/her happy." It seriously put a damper to reading it. I get there are nuances but I see this plot overused in so many Japanese mangas. I wanted to see something different for their story. Not this.

Yeah definitely overused but im not against is as many people struggled with the same issue. Same gender or not. In real life where most end up in a heartbreaking way, I must say, i love the way they solve it. You see, human get depressed over dumb stuff so often as sometimes we failed to see how simple it is on our own.

oh i feel you sooo bad this stupid ass plot device has been rehashed soooo many times in japanese bl and literally for DECADES up until this point, when it's just... so contrived, so derivative, so LAZY! and it really just highlights the reality that these bl authors be straight women with a fetish for gay men (not even real gay men too mind you but the "i'm only in love with one man as a special excetion" type "gays" :/) and have never probably even spoken to actual gay people, never mind help build community with the people they turn into material for their bum ass books #lol.
like seriously, i feel like taking this type of flawed, self-hating "i wish i was straight so i could be happy :(" thinking as a common thing/problem among gay people may fly up till the early 2010's. but like a whole entire DECADE+ later, this same exact tired ass "ohhh we can't be together because we're BOTH MEN and MEN IN LOVE TOGETHER can't have a future, so it's better if we go back to being straight :(" conflict is still written as the most complicated, nuanced lgbt+/identity-centered problem that gay men will face, and not anything else beyond that? and i think the cultural difference reason is only somewhat plausible and definitely overplayed when i'm pretty sure japan is more progressive than say, korea, when it comes to gay relationships. like for god's sake, the first partnership registry for same sex couples that provided partnership certification was established in 2015 - in 2025, it's now been established across 31 prefectures. hell, they even have a partnership familyship system established in several jurisdictions now, which recognizes children of gay couples. even before this, there's the known practice of gay couples, and not just in japan, adopting each other into their households to bypass the lack of marriage and partnership laws. like i know not all gay couples in japan can get the benefits and acknowledgement in place and legally even with all this social progress but come on, there's so much shit here to cover that already goes far past beyond this elementary-ass, self-hating baby gay 101 problem about wanting to break up and go back to being "normal" cause no future together, especially in modern times, but i guess this would require that straight bl authors have genuine empathetic interest in gay people beyond simply viewing them as fetish objects to write about #lol.
anyway, soz for agreeing to your point so hard i went on a whole tangent. i held this bl in somewhat high regards cause i loved the character's designs and thought they were so cute and silly, so when it pulled that shallow, tired, rehashed plot device i've seen a million times before it got me sooo heated n disappointed that i rolled my eyes throughout the entire thing and skimmed through the final confessions/revelations part because it just couldn't be anything more than corny to me now. genuinely wished this stayed as a shallow comfort, low-emotional investment type read instead of whatever this attempt at trying to tackle "gay couple legitimacy" is, because at least that'd be more enjoyable :/

honestly yeah, it's probably very fair to say that they're srill going through systemic discrimination and the like that's still similar in nature and ongoing for decades but the way the author plays out the trope here IS certainly lazy and overdone #lol like there's not even anything new to it, so it gets so tiring to see the rehashed "one-sided break up for the good of the partner's future" trope because the way it gets played out and resolved is so predictable, and they never do anything new or creative with it :/
