Can someone explain why SeungHo sought out the painter in the first place? One of the hoes mentioned that he expected NaKyum to be an old bearded man. And it got me thinking. SH had no idea who the artist was (or did he? And why did he kill the informant, wonder if they'll ever say) so going by what SH said, he had no clue who this guy is. Now, us people with eyeballs would have guessed that he would seek him out because he's a beautiful boy. But if it wasn't attraction, was it for amusement? Why would he be so turned on by them? It doesn't seem to be at all because of his partners and I doubt it is because he is so vain. He doesn't seem to be immediately turned on by the artist, maybe only the second or third night, ...maybe? So why did he presumably walk or ride to his neighbor's house, I'm guessing with a hard on, to fwomp the morning away with the red headed bitchy one. I wanna hear some theories of you have any.
This is actually explained in chapter 1. Seungho came upon a book of erotic paintings, published under a pseudonym and put someone to go find the author. That's the initial scenes of the story, the servant relating that he found who the author was and recounting what he found out.
As for the reason why Seungho got so enticed with Nakyum's paintings ... also in chapter 1, the first thing he says to Nakyum is how much his painting affect him (he pulls Nakyum's hands to his groin, indicating that he gets aroused by it). Remember, Seungho lives for his orgies and NK paintings are like aphrodisiac for him. This became clear also in the scene where he sees NK first painting of him and immediately goes looking for Jihwa (the red haired lover) and doesn't even want to wait to get into a room. That's also the scene where we get to know that up until now Seungho needed some help to get it up and his lovers had to give him a blow job every time. So, more or less, Seungho's dick can't keep up with his whoring and NK paintings were the viagra he found it worked so he put that poor servant to look for NK.
As for when Seungho, I think he didn't entertain the idea of looking at a lowborn no matter how cute but the minute he started to interact with NK, he couldn't help but be intrigued by him. The first time we get to see him losing focus because of NK was after they got into that confrontation after Seungho mocked Inhun's poem and Nakyum flat out called him trash compared to Inhun. Seungho couldn't fuck his lover, because he kept thinking of Nakyum. In his thoughts 'He had the nerve to tell me this, though he'd tremble in fear when I so much as approach him'... I think at that moment, Seungho was a goner because he never met someone like Nakyum, that despite being so afraid of him, still fights back. That coupled with the sexual tension that started between the two in the sections, with Seungho and Nakyum 'locked in a gaze' as the other lover said. Seungho may be oblivious to basic rules of decency like getting consent but he is shown to be extremely intelligent when it comes to figure out people ( just like he spot Inhun fake mediocre ass at first sight)... and Seungho soon caught up Nakyum sexual arousal and curiosity towards him. At that point also, Nakyum becomes even more of a challenge because he is so innocent and tries so hard to deny his sexual desires. Seungho's interest in Nakyum was already being noticed and talked about way before they had that drunk sex and Nakyum, although he is infatuated with Inhun, wasn't dreaming of his teacher after he moved in and starting watching his sinful master having sex... , he was having erotic dreams with Seungho.
Ok maybe last question for Zarathustra sensei, if you don't mind. Do you think there's some kind of metaphor or deeper meaning behind the idea of them being painted. Let's say the paintings were a window to what is desired. NaKyum paints what he wants, and SeungHo consumes it because there is something he wants too. (Btw this is something that drives me mad about waiting week to week on these stories- it gives me too much time to wonder) there's a shift in the paintings to depict strangers, then SeungHo, and then SeungHo wanting NaKyum to be in the paintings with him.
I also thought the deer from the hunt was like a metaphor. Helpless deer. Injun takes a shot. Takes several shot. Creature is just hurt and flailing. SeungHo skillfully ends it's suffering with one sword thrust (waggles eyebrows) What do you think?
Sensei?? me? no.no I'm nothing like that. Actually so many here put forward a lot of analysis that I could never do. I don't even know if PON is meant to be this complex but I always enjoy when readers do interpretations on stories they like.
The deer hunt scene was mentioned before here and I do remember I liked the analysis. It was quite interesting. I think it compared the deer to NK and the differences between Seungho and Inhun in his life. Maybe it was your post?
Someone else also post another interesting analysis here a few days ago about Seungho's personality and how he always react in a way to do the worse that someone expects of him every time his gestures get rebuked or someone accuses him of something. The scene with Jihwa where he said he better not disappoint the nobles who were gossiping that he was sleeping with a lowborn. The scene where NK said he hated him and he said better be hated properly and went after Inhun with sword.
I have not much depth to analyze it like this so I don't know if the paintings itself have a deeper meaning. I do think Seungho seems to be on a mission to make Nakyum to admit his own lust and the mirror and the painting seems to be about this. It's no coincidence too that NK couldn't paint his own face in the painting (the jerking off one that happened even before NK was aware he had slept with Seungho). The author also uses Seungho as the truth teller in NK's dreams, always confronting him about things he won't admit. So, maybe you are right, the paintings at some point will reflect Nakyum and Seungho enjoying themselves since I expect this to be a classic rape plot with drama and redemption (and I'm here for it. Warehouse, Caste Heaven and many other stories that entwine abusive partners in Yaoi are so much harder to read than PON but this one just got to be so popular that became the rallying cry. I wish only adults read this, truly, because then the discussion would be as moot as discussing an incest or murder or any non confirmative taboo genre that exists for years geared for adult readers. )
Thank you for your reply, anyway.
No thank you for your reply! I haven't read through as thoroughly as you on the comments.
I know everyone hates rape plots, but I try to see stories 1. From the lens of when the story takes place. Hell, you can cut down a man in this time period (just cause you're a lord and the mood strikes you) and it's perfectly alright. What's a bit of rape and assault? To his credit, SeungHo stops midway in the pavilion and tries to help NaKyum after he goes completely wild on his ass (after he and Inhun come back from their daytrip) by ordering a doctor, allowing expensive medications to be prepared for him and then by moving his well-fucked body to his room, which is apparently warmer...
And 2, rape fantasy, tho somewhat shameful, is common enough. We shouldn't kink shame. Big difference between the college sportsman and a character created to fan the flames of love and lust. Hopefully no one gets confused (right class?! Rape is bad, got it?!)
It's been fun talking about this story!
Thank you for translating and the memes are *chef's kiss* I don't think I could have handled my rage at the seme without having a comic break at the end of the chapters. ( ̄ε(# ̄)Σ
