The way you worded it kind felt like you were negating the trouble skylar had been going through to get over his feelings for him.
When he said "I'm going to study abroad" that it would be the perfect plot point for the story to be like: Ok cool this kid made you realize your life could be better, he goes on his way to study abroad and you work on getting your life together
And then like they time skip and meet again in the future as 2 adults
