Adele mentioned that in the past, the duchess did treat her warmly, but stopped that affection suddenly one day, and she said that it was probably because the duchess found out that Adele was an illegitimate child (ch17)
So this tells me that the duke married the current duchess after he already brought Adele in. Going by how you said that Kuarn is older than Adele, it’s safe to assume that he was from a previous marriage or, more likely, from a fling the duchess had. Obviously having illegitimate children is frowned upon, and Kuarn is a constant reminder to her that she has a child that can bring her shame in society.
I think she might feel the same about Adele too, because she’s an illegitimate child of the duke and therefore can bring the duchess shame in society because she’s stepmom to a bastard child. She’s angry at the duke but can’t direct it to him so she directs her anger to Adele, who is innocent in all this.
I’m pretty sure Kuarn received similar but way lighter treatment than Adele if it’s true that he’s an illegitimate child of the duchess, and maybe to the duchess, he’s a mistake.
