I have the same experience with a friend and i also wonder. Like someone else said, nose blindness is a thing and if you're used to a smell you won't detect it.
But at the same time i wonder... what about when you leave the shower? Cause ik that when I don't shower for a few days I stop smelling myself, but when I start stinking throughout the day ......
