I'm pretty sure in the novel there was some POV of him. (Sorry it's been a while I dropped this after s1 finished and I read the novel) It was something along the lines of how he knew everything she said to him was a lie. Like she didn't care for him at all cause her eyes showed her true emotions.

Did you read the story because Penelope gave him the option to leave if he wanted to? (it's in chapters 55-56) She gave him the ring saying if he wanted to leave he could but he chose to stay, so is it her fault? Throughout the story, she had been protecting him from her family and the other knights. If he wanted to do anything she would give it to him. Him being her slave was probably the best thing although I'm not happy he's a slave but we can't do anything about it. Also since he was at a slave auction, he could've had a worse master than Penelope. I suggest you read the story again.

You mean when she's emotionally manipulating him again so that he won't hold her responsible for his situation? This is a common tactic abusers use because they know the abused won't leave or will just come back. She even said so herself that even if he accepted her offer, she suspected he would just stick to her anyway. If she truly wanted to free him, she would've just done it without the theatrics.

penelope is literally supposed to be a villain. shes not some saint. even during her trial she says “i’ll show you that the biggest villain in this game… is me.” i won’t defend her, but she’s a villain. why would you read a villain plot if you were not okay with morally grey acts? she also did want to give him the ring - because in the book she says that she wants eclis to be with her “by his own will” but he pushed it back on with force that hurt her.
people are defending her because she’s not supposed to be a saint or anything, she’s desperate to survive and was using any means to do so.

I understand what you are sayin but during the time she was" manipulating" she already knew she wanted him she was trying to get him on her side so that he wouldn't kill her. Nothing she has done is consider being an abuser. You also need to take account that she’s also scared of him she’s been doing all that so he doesn’t kill her. She saw the way he easily killed people. If he wasn't a slave you wouldn't have been saying that, if he was a free person you would think she's a nice person. Also didn't Eckles stalk and tried to kidnap Penelope too, how is that not considered something bad?

Do I expect Penelope to be a nice person? No. But I do expect her to not actively participate in violating human rights, aka slave ownership, and being a shitty owner on top of it. She would treat a dog better than Eckles.

And you're right. Her treatment of Eckles doesn't make sense. She treats Derrick better, for god's sake. From a story perspective, it must be because she actually likes holding power over him after being the powerless one for so long. From a meta perspective, it's cause it's shit writing.

I like penny and i understand her circunstances and point of view and that she is never supposed to be a saintly and conventially good FL before anyone comes at me but i still find that plotline and her actions very uncomfortable to read through and how everyone very so casually dismisses it so finding that more people didn't like it either it's kinda. comforting because for the longest time i thought i was just being hypersensible.
