The only thing I didn't like about this is how they perceived being tan as ugly? Like seriously??!
It's because it's based on a chinese novel and chinese stereotypes. It kinda sucks, but I can at least tell you where it comes from? In china beautiful, clear, white skin is the ideal. Blemishes and tans are considered less favorable. The whole freckle and tan thing stems back to classism. Because if you have freckles and tans you're likely out working in the sun or can't take as good care of your looks. While those who could stay out of the sun or had the money to put towards self care had the white procelain skin.
The opposite here. If you have a tan and freckles, chances are you've been vacationing at the Bahamas. In America, Rich folks have Yachts full of tan women, and if you're pale, if you're not in a Gothic scene, good luck. Everyone loves a good spray tan. Actually, people pay a lot of money for spray tans. It's crazy.
