I can't help but have a love hate relationship with this trope. Mainly due to at times its very realistic in the most it can be in a fucking BL.
Like yes he's a bad guy, they both are. But honestly, although I didn't do that shit he did I did bad things when I got triggered like that.

It's genuinely a realistic perception of how something like that can affect someone and their self. His reaction to his ex vs how he snapped is, although horrid, a very realistic thing. I'm not defending his actions cause they are fucking bad. But I weirdly like how its genuinely shown. Showing the bad sides of ptsd. Because ptsd isn't just being vulnerable, ptsd can manifest in more violent and horrid actions. Making it the abused becomes the abuser
