I think the translator meant in terms of the age of consent in Japan, which is 16. I don’t think the translator is trying to justify that the manga is promoting pedo behavior, but more so as to why the mangaka themselves didn’t seem to consider it problematic since this is a common romantic narrative in Japanese comics. I personally can think of other manga that has the age difference romance between high schooler and teacher as well called hirunaka no ryuusei, it was really big at the time in the should community and thank fucking god the high schooler mc didn’t end up with the teacher but a classmate instead ╮(￣▽￣)╭.
