iirc she was kinda forced into the engagement because trash emperor wanted to bag Ariadne when she sh owed she had value/smarts. so she had no choice but to take up Cesare's "deal" at the last minute since Alphonso ain't helping.
Cesare ends up cheating on her under different circumstances from their past life-
(1) He truly does end up falling for her this time, but it's an insecure, codependent type of obsession (ironically similar to Ariadne's feelings for him in the first life) and when he sees the pile of letters that Ariadne and Alfonso had been exchanging, it confirms all his fears that she still loves Alfonso despite being engaged to him and he's hurt/lashes out.
(2) The sister gets Cesare drunk and they hook up, the sister making sure Ariadne and everyone else sees this
This was also around the time where Ariadne had been entertaining fleeting thoughts that this Cesare is different and the marriage might work.
When Ariadne finds out, Cesare comes to beg her (SUUUPER SATISFYING READ) and clings/cries about it. He makes a mistake though. He insults the sister's physical features, saying he would never be attracted to a woman like that, thinking it would convince Ariadne.
What it does is give Ariadne a horrible flashback of when her sister came to her jail cell before her death, telling her that Cesare said she was 'disgusting to sleep with, with udders like a cow and broad shoulders like a man and he would never be attracted to a woman like that'.
Even in this life, she unknowingly carried that insecurity and the hope that it was just her sister's lies and cruelty. But with Cesare's begging, it became clear that those words from her past life truly came from him and that's just the kind of man he was to women he discards. She leaves him on the floor kneeling/crying and takes off the ring and breaks the engagement.
