I’m a little disappointed really. I couldn’t read through the chapter because she went through with the ‘mainstream’ misconceptions on corsets. I don’t want to rant so I’ll make it short. Corsets are basically the support garment that gives the woman wearing it back support and chest support. Tight lacing which causes fainting and body modification is more of a trope used in novels back then to depict exaggerations.

Yeah me too, I was very sad when she started talking about how horrible corsets are, when they are in fact not at all.

You have a point, but the context of this is that it was aristocratic women. And it has been proven that aristocratic culture was to make your corset as tight as humanly possible as a social status thing. So I get what your saying but in this context they use tight-lacing in an accurate depiction, or at least mostly accurate. If they had said commoner class people had trouble with tight lacing that would be a different thing.

Tight lacing was a thing but not to the extent we believe it to be. Here's a video with more info:

She does mention that aristocratic woman may have put up with a bit more discomfort (like modern woman might with heels or right jeans), but more than likely not to this extent. Eating some pastries as an afternoon snack would've been fine. Eating a full course meal at Applebee's might've been a bit slower of a process lol

Not really, a too tightly laced corset was actually considered improper and unvirtuous. The impossible thin waists we frequently see in photos are simply a product of the use of tricks with padded garments or even rudimentary "photoshop". Corsets were extremely complicated pieces of garment tailored for comfort and support and while it does inflict a certain restriction on movement it doesn't really does much more than that if property wore.

THANK YOU! Corsets really weren’t that bad it’s rather annoying they had a chapter on it without doing the research smh

Archery is not so simple and requires a lot of draw strength from the user, especially if it is supposed to function as a weapon that it is.

    Frogbank July 6, 2020 12:33 am

Maybe they lowered the weight of the draw.....? And it also seems like some of them have practiced before as well, like that green-haired lady. But I agree, archery is most definitely not easy
