I agree with most of the things you've said here, and you've made some good points. Though I feel like the reasonable answer to your questions is that they were never that serious of a couple. The main couple of this series is Kouichi and Caius, the secondary couple being Rail and Dyne. I think the reason why there were so many jump cuts and why so many things were left unexplained is because the author never intended to give Sefal and Erald much screen time. It was meant to be quick and brief. If they fully explained the backstory and left no questions unanswered, it would probably be much longer than one chapter. As for young Erald's design being too similar to Caius... I think that was on purpose. Everything from Erald's appearance, all the way down to his personality was meant to remind the reader of Caius. I think the entire backstory as a whole was meant to serve as a lesson to the main couple. The whole idea of "just do what you can" is scarily similar to Kouichi's dilemma and the entire backstory felt like a convenient setup to solve our main couple's problem. Plus, Erald appears to be passing of an illness anyway. It would be very saddening for the reader if the author dedicated multiple chapters and a full in-depth backstory to a couple that could never be. Maybe we'll see the rest of their story someday ╮(￣▽￣)╭
