The people worth something were able to accept her dark skin and all because they know she's a wonderful person and her skin tone doesn't matter (not to mention she's beautiful af something many people realize), and she knows that almost all the attention she's receiving now is because of her skin change and they're all superficial af and I'm honestly here for it cus she is taking none of that shit and wasted no time calling her parents out, and tbh I feel bad for the dad just a bit because he scared of her powers and the spirit king and thus felt awkward being around her, and is realizing he needs to cut that shit out because his daughter isn't a blood thirsty monster but a kind thoughtful girl and decided going to the battlefield with her was the best course of action to let people know she's an ally, so he does care he just fucking sucks at showing it (which is shown in his regretful expression after MCs brother calls his ass out and when he smiles seeing MC surrounded by her friends after returning from the war). The mom on the other hand can kiss my ass she didn't even dare to spend time with her when her skin was dark but now she suddenly feels inclined to be with her even making herself into a victim, at least the dad fucking tried. But yes while this story doesn't focus only on her skin change it shows how shallow some mfs are by letting her appearance lead them to make false conclusions about her and how her change in appearance (which made her part of the majority) changes how many people view her which in turn basically exposes their toxic racist judgmental crusty bitch asses.
The story may not be pulling racist shit but it sure is doing some colorist shit right here. We didn’t need to be shown how people in this world were toxic colorists - we already knew that. The mc didn’t need to be white to expose her world’s disgusting judgment on the color of her skin because she already knew that. Frankly, what the fuck is the point of turning her white? She could have accepted the light spirit without the whitewashed skin but nooo she gets the pale skin from the spirit of goodness. That, in and of itself, is a problem. No matter how much she worked to get to the point of loving her skin, now she’s pale and it undercuts a lot of the story. Yes her friends loved her no matter what. Yes the dark spirit actually wasn’t that bad. But why does the light spirit -have- to make her paler? Literally makes zero sense to associate the light spirit that’s “good” with light skin when mc was already good to begin with. The story is just perpetuating that “white = good” despite everything it tried to build up and it’s such a dumb and useless turn. ┑(￣Д ￣)┍
