Ive never been more devastated and absolutely destroyed by such an amazing story. Both of them coming from such horrible circumstances and never having anyone else aside from one another, this trope is genuinely one of my favorites. I love the realism of their characters, such as Lewellyns very simple minded thinking and his development, first starting off as this creepy genius mastermind in the beginning to simply a man who wants to find the only person who’s ever treated him as one. Shavonne was such a complex character with such a range of emotions that were so well written out, every action and flaw and every hurt yet love he caused. The eventual realization that he shldnt fear having only Lewellyn, that he shld stop running away and finally facing his life. The way they suffered so mich throughout the story due to circumstances they had no control over, and het despite it all through their unending love for one another they were able to survive and live an actually good life, is beyond me. So many chances for Shavonne to have done the wrong thing, so many times Lewellyn cldve started resenting Shavonne in the beginning for the way he turned on him, and yet they were so true to one another despite the otherworldly pressure and pain it caused. I love the initial wave of Shavonnes fear of being in love with a serial killer or having his doubts about Lewellyn in the beginning of their relationship, to loving Lewellyn so unconditionally and easily even after all his memories came back, falling for Lewellyn was as easy as seeing him as human, and i think its so beautiful. And the undoubtedly human way Lewellyn loves Shavonne, loyal and overprotective, and yet he was never truly “tamed” like the dog the guards wanted him to be. He didnt hug that pillow, he didnt stop waiting, and he definitely didnt stop worrying or loving Shavonne even if Shavonne told him and wanted him to. The guards so wholeheartedly believed that Lewellyn wldn js become some loyal mutt to Shavonne who they cld control, but Lewellyn loved so much like a human despite how he was conditioned to be, and i love the story for so deeply emphasizing that. Everything about this story is perfection and I love the way the author never truly bothered to flesh out a character aside from our main ones, bcs at the end of the day Lewellyn and Shavonne only ever had eyes for each other and so the author would not care to think and develop anyone else but them. Author absolutely cooked with this one its such an amazing and rare thought out piece of literature with so many touches of mystery and romance all so intertwined intensely and work so well with one another. I fear i will never find another story like this ever again. Absolute kudos author
I still cant believe that there are some people who are cheering for Ja hyun rather than Yato.
For such a longtime now we see Soru struggle to be treated as a human and to be able to receive love and care. In the beginning Ja hyun, regardless of what he felt, still did what he did and basically used her as his tool just to earn something in return. Even if later on in the story he changed, his treatment towards her was always harsh and painful, always being super physical or demeaning towards her. We see throughout the story that he struggles to understand why she is the way she is or just generally shunning her away. It wasn't even until the absolute worst situation happened to her that he began to care about her.
As for Soru we see that one of the main reasons why shes so inlove with Jahyun is bcs she was DEPRIVED of this love and has never even seen what it was like. She says it herself that she was greedy bcs of the peace he gave her(aka all the goblins going away) and fell inlove with the simple idea of him being her “savior”. But she was just reliant and dependent on him and kept being hurt in the process, but in the end she stood up and defended not only Yato but herself, saying that beings like her deserve to atleast be able to live too regardless if theyre human or not. She defended herself and choice for herself to be with Yato, unlike all the times she was shut down by Jahyun when she wanted to do something or help someone. And sure it was valid for Jahyun to not want her to strain herself, but it became to the point that he wld demean her whenever she tried to make a decision she thought was best, unlike Yato who respected her wishes even if it hurt him to. As I said Jahyun cld never really understand her or tried to, until the very ending when he realized he loved her. Which is honestly so shit bcs he only realizes how much shes going thru when hes finally starting to fall in love and EVEN THEN denied his love for her, to the point of hurting her.
Yato was someone who is exactly like Soru. He was a being who was never treated like a human and cld never understand them and yet when instinct told him he had to kill this girl to get what he wanted, instead he helped her and killed those who hurt her. Soru sees that shes the only one who can understand him and hes the only one who can understand her. They have such a deep mutual bond to the point that only she wld let him eat her and wld be happy abt it, bcs if she kept be treated as human and Yato cant be treated as a human, then at the very least in a different life Yato cld be reborn as one and live the normal human life for them. And yet despite that he never hurt her no matter how many times she offered, not during the pinnacle of his hunger and not when his emotions were so unbearable and confusing. He was willing to give up everything he has for her instead, letting himself be captured js so she can be treated. He cldv been just like Jahyun, who once he realized that Soru cldv been of use to him by getting revenge, he used her. But no, Yato, who has craved to be human for hundreds of years, had the one and only solution in front of him, and despite everything in him telling him to, he never once used her.
Soru and Yato belong together bcs Jahyun was someone that cld never understand or truly give the love Soru wanted, he wldv forever looked at her with only guilt and pity, he even says so himself. Jahyun also lived on such a more high level of living that even if he says he wanted a quiet life with Soru, he wldv never been contempt with it.
And while Soru starts off feeling pity for Yato, she then realizes that Yato was who she was searching for all along. They cldnt give each other their hearts, so they gave each other themselves instead. Yato was always willing to listen to her, no matter the pain or hurt it caused him(when she asked him to save Jahyun) and Soru was always going to accept Yato despite everything he’d done and all the people he hurt. They understand and they care, they dont know how quite to love anymore but theyll heal together through it all. As Soru says, moss may just be moss, but if you decide to call it a flower then its a flower. Yato is her flower.
And we can see in the end, Soru is the moon that wanted the sunlight, but she had no idea that her own light was shining onto Yato, the flower who can only grow at night. And together their love is so bright and blinding that it even outshines Jahyun.
Jahyun had every chance to be kinder and softer and better, and instead he was conflicted and painfully demeaning, he isn’t a bad person but he was definitely cruel. And to someone like Soru who has only every know that, maybe thats another reason why she felt okay with him. But Yato despite being a monster, the kind shes lived with, treated her with such different kindness and respect that she realizes this is what she has wanted her whole life. THEY ARE MEANT TO BE.
