it’s always a competition on this site to be the first one to list out the ways in which a new manga/manhwa is problematic but this time people didn’t even pretend to have evidence for their claims
i might sound crazy when i say this.. but you do not have to completely make up elements of the story that make it problematic/immoral to be free to say you hate it. you can just dislike it, without any justification! that way you can avoid publicly making it known that everything you’ve heard about grooming was learned from mgg comments.
and leaving aside the rampant misuse of CSA terms.. where exactly does this happen in the story? in what chapter does this take place?????
what…. you saw in the preview that the mc is a child at the start of the story and just ran with it? or maybe you saw the cover and wanted to run to the comments to be the first one to decry this manhwa as pedophilia ? you read, at most, a dozen chapters out of a manhwa that will likely have 80+ chapters, and despite there being not a single suggestion of grooming, sexual attraction to children, incest (apparently any sort of relationship between two people in which one takes care of the other is now pseudo-incest because .. people who are related take care of each other i guess) and know you’ve predicted the entire plot of the webnovel and know that this story will end in those things ?
i want to think that everyone in the comments flinging accusations is saying them with good intentions ie stopping the sexualization of young girls but this is… not helpful at all. at best it’s performative (how would a mangago comment change anything? wouldn’t contacting the author/scanlation team/publishing company/literally anyone else have more of an effect?) and at worst this is a chain reaction of ignorant people getting themselves angry over a hypothetical that doesn’t actually exist

not sure where you got the “sjw bullshit” part from but the performative part was referring to people who commented along the lines of this sort of significant age gap/dynamic being like.. endemic to the genre, or making comments accusing it of romanticizing csa .. like that’s a serious accusation. i don’t believe it makes sense in this situation fbut if you were someone who does.. what is your comment on an insular internet forum accomplishing?
it is impossible to read this without having the knowledge that mc is a child and the guy who picked her up is an adult. so commenting on that.. changes nothing. it’s not a secret that needs exposing, everyone is already aware. nor would commenting incite meaningful change in the shojo genre, which is what i presume you would want if you were someone who believed that massive age gaps are becoming the norm in it.
the large majority of people are commenting because they want other people to see their comment and agree. that is the definition of performative; performing an action for the sake of an audience’s reaction
and i’m not saying “anyone who consumes media that is sketchy MUST singlehandedly crusade against it”. nor am i saying there’s something wrong with wanting to find people who agree. i’m saying that their comments claim outrage but their actions do not agree with the severity of their words— so do they even believe what they’re saying? or understand the implications of the words they choose?
also i’m not sure if this was just a misunderstanding but in my previous comment the main point i made was that you /can/ be uncomfortable with the dynamic— just without flinging around the worst terms that you know because misusing terms like that helps no one. if anything, imprecise language and overuse of words is detrimental to any cause.. misusing them creates connotations that lead away from the original usage. for example, expanding the definition of grooming to “any romantic relationships where the older partner knew the younger partner when they were a minor” is not helping any child sexual abuse survivors. it is not teaching kids and teens the signs to look out for. so i wish it would stop being used so casually in situations like this.
say the age gap is unhealthy. say that you don’t want to see her end up with him even in the future because it would still be weird to you. say that the role he plays for the mc right now makes it impossible for you to imagine them together romantically. and then just stop reading it instead of trying to find a way to make it out into incest/grooming/pedophilia/csa

i was assuming you were referring to “performative activism”, in which case, basically means activism for clout/social brownie points. im 99% sure no one’s getting any clout from posting comments on mangago. and as ive said, one’s reason to voice their opinions isnt always to make major social changes. they just…want to? because this is a discussion forum? (and i dont know what messaging the KOREAN publisher would achieve when most the people here cannot speak korean and are consuming this illegally. besides, its a whole other culture you’re dealing with. whining about it here is easier, bc most people only want to express their opinions)
you’re wrong that /everyone/ is aware this is problematic. if assuming everyone on mangago are adults, then sure, thats a fair assumption. but lots of 13 year olds here. and most importantly, this is a title targeted for all ages. i think it doesnt do any harm to reiterate this shit (if assuming he is the ml as well as her guardian) isnt normal, since kids can read this too. its a whole other ball game if this is rated for adults. thats a fair game. be as fucked up as you want. but not for G rated titles.
i suppose calling it incest and grooming is jumping the gun, because we don’t know for sure if black hair is going to be her official guardian. but the potential is there. its not even about the age gap, but its about the nature of their relationship. its a child and her guardian. its not the age, its the power imbalance. even when she grows up, he was still once her guardian. there’s a reason why adoptive family is still considered incestuous by law in a lot of places. though i agree, flinging CSA terms is only undermining its meanings, but i can understand the sentiment.
when kotofuji says that they should burn his scroll when mayuki is cremated the author kind of played it off as comical and out of the blue but when u think about it and remember that just the night before mayuki confessed that he felt bad because he knew that he would die first and leave kotofuji behind… it becomes pretty obvious that as casual as he said it, kotofuji really has no desire to continue existing without mayuki T-T
