Skyrus liked his childhood friend and one time he kissed him when the guy was sleeping without the guy knowing (he actually did know). A few days later, the friend told him that he likes Skylar back and said he wanted to kiss him but then he tricked Skylar into kissing another classmate and Skylar was traumatized when he realized it was someone else he was kissing. The mf then called Skylar disgusting for liking him and being gay after which they broke their friendship. The whole school soon found out Skylar was gay and everyone started to bully him along with his (ex)friend. Skylar's mom eventually found out that he was being bullied at school and soon after she made him change schools.
Circus's past is also really fucked up and he was literally SA'd by his own teacher when he was a kid. If you're asking if Cirrus has a mental illness then yes he has, actually both of them are mentally ill and has their shits to deal with. Cirrus acts like a total asshole in the first chapters but he eventually starts to act much better (in comparison to the first chaps) and it actually makes sense why he's like that.
