The ribbon was cursed. I can't really get mad at jennette though since she didn't know that it was. The blackk haired guy put a curse on the ribbon, I'm guessing it is to attract blackie and for athanasia's power to get absorbed. As you can see, after receiving the gift, blackie immediately approached Athanasia. When that happens, her body will not be able to handle her powers. Just like when she was young.
